17 Wynoka Street, Pittsburgh, Pa. Early 50’s

48 Fritz Street

Yes we all lived in the house on Wynoka Street.  At one time there were 15 of us.

First floor: the Gutowski’s, Chester, Frances, Vince, Frank, Robert and Bernice.

Second floor: the Juarin’s, Steve, Laura, Dave, Diane, Joanne.  Maybe more!

Third floor: the Heidekat’s. George, Theresa, George, John

Did get a bit crowded and children recognized no boundaries or privacy.   We rand between floors much the the chagrin of our parents that, we realize now days, must have felt a bit crowded and wanted us to respect everyone’s privacy.

Coal was shoveled for heat during the great Snow Storms of the early 50’s that buried Pittsburgh.  I still remember the “clinkers”, they were the large chunks of burnt coal waste that had to be removed from the furnace.  I imaging the name came from the sound they made.  They would clink as they hit the bucket after removal.

The home built in 1900 had a slate roof and was surrounded by the largest Locust Trees I have ever seen to this date. The home still stands today, but without the trees and a large swimming pool in the back yard. Imagine the fun we could have had.
