Coal was shoveled for heat during the great Snow Storms of the early 50's that buried Pittsburgh.  I still remember the "clinkers", they were the large chunks of burnt coal waste that had to be removed from the furnace.  I imaging the name came from the sound they made.  They would clink as they hit the bucket after removal.

The home built in 1900 had a slate roof and was surrounded by the largest Locust Trees I have ever seen to this date. The home still stands today, but without the trees and a large swimming pool in the back yard. Imagine the fun we could have had.
