House is in upper right hand corner and the three front “dangle” porches are visible.

Oh what terror beat in the heart of a 7 year old waiting their turn to be grabbed at random without warning and swung over the edge, held by our ankles. It was uncle Steve Juarin that offered us that opportunity to stare certain death in the eye as it looked up at us from the abyss below.  At least that’s the way I remember it.

Of course the porch off the kitchen had a lot of seduction to it for a young boy. That’s where the uncles talked and laughed, smoked cigars, drank beer, debated politics and told real war stories. It was where we could watch that Incline move up and down the way. as we understood it was one of only a handful of Inclines in the world that had a bend in it. There it was right in front of us if only we were brave enough to step outside and wait.

In small minds there emerged a way thought to be safe. You would first ease open that wooden screen door and stick your head out. Uncle Steve not there, it was safe. Oh, but there was a fatal flaw to that plan. Having made it safely to the porch you would look over the railing. Then without warning, between the passing of the Incline, the unmistakable sound of a wooden screen door banging from behind you rang out. Tense up, maybe it wasn’t uncle Steve. Turn slowly and move to a position where there was at least one other cousin between you and the Angel of the Ankle Dangle. Don;t make eye contact. This of course did not work well. I’m convinced he could smell your fear.

Now did we ever actually experience the death defying dangle or was it just a threat. I don’t know. Seven year old’s memories are easily influenced. What I do know is those memories are pretty consistent among male cousins. So they must be true.
